Norman Wexler was an American screenwriter born on August 16, 1926, in New Bedford, Massachusetts, and died on August 23, 1999, in Washington, District of Columbia. Norman Wexler was born in Massachusetts into a working-class family. He grew up in Detroit, Michigan, and then studied at Harvard University. He moved to New York City in 1951 and worked in an advertising agency while beginning to write plays, some of which were performed Off-Broadway. He later moved to Hollywood, where he achieved his first success as a screenwriter with Joe. Manic-depressive, his illness caused him various problems, perhaps the most high-profile of which was his arrest in 1972 for making threats against Richard Nixon during a flight from New York to San Francisco.
